Two movies starring actors of Nepali origin to compete at Oscar Award

Glamour Nepal, Kathmandu: ‘Liar’s Dice’, a movie acted by an actress of Nepali origin Geetanjali Thapa, has been nominated for the prestigious Oscar award. Actor Geetanjali is the resident of Darjeeling. The movie is written and directed by Geetu Mohandas. The film narrates the story of a wife from indigenous community who goes to the city in search of her missing husband after having left to work many months ago.

According to Supran Sen, general secretary of Film Federation of India, Liar’s Dice has left behind 29 other movies pitted for the nomination of the much-celebrated Oscar award. Liar’s Dice has competed with movies like Shahid, Queen, Mary Kom, Mardaani and 2 States, regional films Fandry (Marathi), Yellow (Marathi), Apur Pachali (Bengali)and Jatishwar (Bengali), among others, to get the nomination for the Oscar Award.

The film has also received two National Film Awards including, Best Actress for Geetanjali Thapa and Best Cinematography for Rajeev Ravi at the 61st National Film Awards.

With this movie getting making in to the Oscar nomination list, two Nepali actors will be competing in the Oscar award toward foreign language film category. Nepali movie ‘Jhola’ starring Garima Pant is already in the nomination for the Oscar award. ‘Jhola’ is a movie made on a story of cultural practice that dates back to 100 years.
