A shaved head, maroon Buddhist robes, visible tattoos and the unmistakable face of a fashion model turned Paing Takhon into an international social-media sensation almost overnight.
When photographs of the Myanmar actor and model began circulating widely in January 2021, many people discovering him for the first time knew only one thing: social media had nicknamed him the “hottest monk.”
But the viral photographs told only a small part of his story. Paing Takhon was already an established model, actor and singer before the images travelled around the world. And despite what some posts suggested, he had not permanently left entertainment to become a monk.
The viral monk photos were from a 10-day monastic stay
Paing shared the photographs on Instagram on January 12, 2021, after spending 10 days living as a Buddhist monk at the beginning of the year.
He described the experience as peaceful and personally meaningful. Contemporary reports confirmed that the monastic period lasted only 10 days.
Short-term entry into monastic life is a familiar Buddhist practice for men in Myanmar and some other Southeast Asian countries. Paing’s celebrity status, however, gave his experience an unusually international audience.
The visual transformation was striking. Fans who knew him for his longer hair, fashion shoots and stylish public appearances suddenly saw him with a completely shaved head, barefoot and dressed in traditional maroon robes. His tattoos remained visible, creating the contrast that made the photographs instantly recognizable.
As the images spread across social media, entertainment pages and online communities began referring to him as the “hottest monk.”
He was famous before the monk photos
Paing Takhon’s career had already been growing for years. He began working as a runway model in 2014 before moving into television commercials, music videos and fashion campaigns. He later entered acting, making his film debut in 2017, and developed a fan following beyond Myanmar, particularly in Thailand.
His fame in Thailand grew to the point that he was appointed a Myanmar tourism ambassador to Thailand in 2019. The 2021 monk photographs nevertheless introduced him to a much broader global audience.
Later that same year, he attracted another round of international attention when TC Candler placed him at No. 1 on its “100 Most Handsome Faces of 2021” list. The annual list is an entertainment ranking rather than an official or scientific measurement of attractiveness.
By the time that ranking was announced, however, Paing’s life had taken a far more serious turn.
From viral celebrity to imprisonment
Myanmar’s military seized power on February 1, 2021. In the weeks that followed, Paing was among a number of entertainment figures who publicly participated in demonstrations opposing the takeover.
Security forces arrested him in Yangon on April 8, 2021. His sister confirmed the arrest to Reuters at the time.
On December 27, 2021, Paing was sentenced to three years in prison with hard labour under Section 505(a) of Myanmar’s Penal Code. Contemporary reports linked the case to his participation in protests and support for the Civil Disobedience Movement.
The case received international attention, bringing a very different kind of spotlight to a celebrity whom many overseas followers had first encountered through his light-hearted viral monk photographs.
Paing did not serve the full sentence. On March 2, 2022, he was released from Yangon’s Insein Prison under a pardon announced by Myanmar’s military authorities. Several other prominent entertainment figures were released at the same time. State television confirmed the releases, according to Associated Press reporting.
Paing Takhon returned to public life
Following his release, Paing gradually returned to public appearances and entertainment-related activities. He was photographed attending a public event in Yangon later in March 2022, his first reported public appearance after leaving prison.
Years later, his personal life generated headlines of its own. Paing publicly revealed his relationship with Linn Mya Phu in August 2024. The couple later became engaged, with reports placing their engagement ceremony on December 29, 2024.
Then, on February 25, 2025, Paing shared photographs from their marriage ceremony and announced that his fiancée had become his wife.
The real story behind the ‘hottest monk’
That wider history changes the context of the photographs whenever they resurface online.
Paing Takhon was not an unknown monk who unexpectedly became a model-like internet sensation. He was an established Myanmar entertainer temporarily entering monastic life as part of a 10-day Buddhist experience.
The viral photographs became one extraordinary chapter in a much longer public journey – one that has included modelling, acting, music, Buddhist monastic life, international fame, political demonstrations, imprisonment, release and marriage.
Years after those maroon-robed photographs first captured the internet’s attention, Paing Takhon’s story remains considerably more complex than the nickname that made him globally famous.
