Apple has officially unveiled its biggest iPhone lineup for 2026, introducing the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max alongside a completely new device: the company’s first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo.
But Apple’s September 9 launch in Cupertino also came with a surprise absence. There was no standard iPhone 18.
Instead, Apple placed its premium Pro models and the $1,999 foldable Duo at the centre of its latest smartphone strategy, delivering major upgrades in cameras, performance, artificial intelligence and battery life.
iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max Bring Major Camera and Performance Upgrades
The iPhone 18 Pro features a 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display, while the larger iPhone 18 Pro Max comes with a 6.9-inch screen.
Both models retain Apple’s premium Pro design while introducing a smaller Dynamic Island. They are available in four finishes: Black, Silver, Glacier and a new Burgundy colour.
At the heart of both phones is Apple’s new A20 Pro processor, paired with a next-generation vapor-chamber cooling system designed to maintain stronger performance during demanding tasks such as gaming, video production and AI processing.
Apple says the combination delivers the highest sustained performance yet on an iPhone.
Variable Aperture Is the Big Camera Upgrade
Photography is one of the biggest areas of change in the iPhone 18 Pro generation.
Apple has introduced a new 48-megapixel Fusion Main camera with variable aperture, allowing users to control how much light enters the lens while gaining greater control over depth of field.
The Camera app is becoming more professional as well.
New Pro controls allow users to manually adjust settings including aperture, shutter speed and white balance, while a histogram can be used to monitor exposure.
For photographers, filmmakers and content creators who previously relied on third-party camera apps for more advanced controls, the change could make the built-in iPhone Camera app significantly more versatile.
A20 Pro and Siri AI Push the iPhone Deeper Into AI
Artificial intelligence is another major part of Apple’s 2026 iPhone strategy.
The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max ship with iOS 27 and support Apple Intelligence and the company’s new Siri AI experience.
Apple says its AI system prioritizes processing on the device whenever possible, while more complex requests can use its Private Cloud Compute infrastructure.
Apple Intelligence will become available with iOS 27 on September 14 for compatible devices set to supported languages. Siri AI will begin rolling out the same day as a beta for supported devices configured in English, with additional language support planned later.
Availability can vary depending on device, language, country and local regulations.
iPhone 18 Pro Max Offers Up to 45 Hours of Video Playback
Battery life has also received a major upgrade.
Apple says eSIM-only versions of the iPhone 18 Pro Max can deliver up to 45 hours of video playback, while the iPhone 18 Pro is rated for up to 36 hours.
The redesigned vapor chamber should also help the phones sustain performance during longer gaming sessions, video recording and other intensive workloads.
Storage Now Reaches 2TB
Apple is offering both Pro models with significantly expanded storage options.
Customers can choose from 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB configurations.
The 2TB option will be particularly useful for photographers and filmmakers working with high-resolution images and large professional video files.
iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max Price and Release Date
In the United States, the iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299.
The new models are around $100 more expensive than their previous-generation counterparts, with Reuters reporting that higher memory-component costs contributed to the increase.
Preorders begin September 12, with the phones reaching stores and customers on September 18.
The initial rollout covers more than 65 countries and regions, including the United States, United Kingdom, UAE, India, Australia, Canada, China, Japan and Singapore.
Apple Finally Launches a Foldable iPhone
The biggest announcement of the event, however, was not another conventional iPhone.
Apple officially entered the foldable smartphone market with the iPhone Duo.
When closed, the Duo features a 5.4-inch outer Super Retina XDR display. Opening the device reveals a much larger 7.6-inch inner Super Retina XDR screen, giving users a tablet-like workspace in a device designed to remain pocketable.
Apple describes the Duo as the thinnest iPhone it has made when opened.
The device uses Grade 5 titanium and a precision folding hinge and will be available in Star White and Night Sky.
iPhone Duo Brings Split-Screen Multitasking to iPhone
The folding design has also allowed Apple to rethink how iOS works on an iPhone.
On the Duo, iOS 27 supports Split View, allowing two apps to appear side by side.
Users can also work with two windows from the same app, move between apps more efficiently and save preferred app combinations.
Apple Pencil support is another major addition, opening the iPhone to handwriting, sketching, document annotation and other creative tasks previously associated more closely with the iPad.
Folding Design Creates New Camera Features
Apple is also using the Duo’s two displays to introduce photography features that conventional iPhones cannot offer in the same way.
Users can take higher-quality selfies with the rear cameras while using the outer display to frame the shot.
Duo Preview lets the person being photographed see a live preview on the external screen.
Smart Take uses on-device AI to detect when subjects are posing and automatically capture a photograph, while Kid Cue displays Peanuts animations on the outer screen to encourage children to look towards the camera.
The 48MP Fusion Main camera can also record 4K Dolby Vision video at up to 120 frames per second.
A20 Pro, Wi-Fi 7 and C2 Modem Power the Duo
The iPhone Duo uses the same A20 Pro processor found in the iPhone 18 Pro models.
Apple has paired it with a custom vapor chamber and dual-battery architecture designed specifically for the folding form factor.
The company’s N1 wireless chip enables Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread, while its C2 cellular modem handles mobile connectivity.
iPhone Duo Starts at $1,999

Preorders begin October 16, with availability starting October 23 across more than 70 countries and regions, including India and the UAE.
That puts the Duo directly into competition with premium foldables from Samsung and other manufacturers.
What Happened to the Regular iPhone 18?
One of the most unusual aspects of Apple’s 2026 launch is what the company did not announce.
Apple unveiled the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, but no standard iPhone 18 appeared during the September event.
For now, Apple has not formally announced when a regular iPhone 18 might arrive.
That means any specifications, pricing or release dates circulating for an unreleased standard model should still be treated as unconfirmed until Apple makes an official announcement.

The 2026 launch feels bigger than a routine annual smartphone refresh.
