After days of uncertainty and legal hurdles, the Nepali film ‘Lalibazar’ is finally set to hit in theaters. The Patan High Court has refused to extend the short-term interim order that had previously blocked the film’s release, effectively clearing the way for its screening.
The decision came on Wednesday from a joint bench of Judges Khadananda Tiwari and Netra Prasad Acharya. With the court choosing not to continue the stay, the film’s distributor and production company, Shatkon Arts, confirmed that ‘Lalibazar’ will now release this Friday, Baisakh 25.
Producer Max Dipesh Khatri welcomed the court’s decision and stated that the film was never intended to hurt any community or group. According to him, ‘Lalibazar’ tells a deeply emotional story centered on the bond between a mother and daughter. “The film highlights a mother’s struggle and sacrifices for her child,” he said, emphasizing its emotional core.
Director and writer Yam Thapa also addressed the controversy surrounding the film. He suggested that much of the criticism was based on assumptions rather than the actual content. “Once audiences watch the film, they will understand that it does not offend anyone,” he expressed with confidence.
The film features a strong ensemble cast including Swastima Khadka, Rabindra Singh Baniya, Samaira Thapa, Mukunda Kumar Shrestha, Abhay Baral, and Prem Pandey, among others. The film also marks the debut of Bishal Devkota and Prashansa Subedi. Bishal is known for his work in theater as both an actor and director, while Prashansa represents a new generation of rising performers.
The screenplay and dialogues have been jointly written by Yam Thapa and Pradeep Bhattarai, adding depth and structure to the narrative.
Interestingly, the legal controversy has brought additional attention to ‘Lalibazar’, increasing public curiosity. While such disputes often delay releases, they can also create buzz and this film seems to have gained exactly that.
Now, with the legal barrier removed, all eyes are on its theatrical performance. Will the film live up to expectations and convert controversy into box office success? The answer will unfold as audiences finally get to watch it on the big screen.
