Kathmandu Metropolitan City Acting Mayor Sunita Dangol made a powerful cultural and fashion statement during her appearance at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, proudly representing Nepal’s heritage on one of the world’s biggest global platforms.

Dressed in a contemporary reinterpretation of the traditional Newari Haku Patasi, Dangol’s appearance quickly drew attention for its elegant blend of cultural identity and modern fashion. Her ensemble was designed by Shrija Shrestha of Ambassador Designs, a label known for transforming traditional Nepali aesthetics into globally appealing contemporary designs.

The outfit featured a modern take on the iconic Haku Patasi, traditionally recognized by its bold black fabric and striking red border, a timeless symbol of strength, pride, and grace among Newari women. Instead of altering its cultural essence, the design elevated the traditional attire into a sophisticated global fashion statement.

One of the standout features of the ensemble was the blouse, redesigned into a tailored blazer-inspired silhouette. The structured fit, curved shawl lapel, textured detailing, and fabric-covered buttons created a refined balance between authority and femininity. Paired with traditional Nyapu Sikhaw jewellery, the overall look reflected both heritage and modern elegance.

Designer Shrija Shrestha has become widely recognized for her ability to merge Nepali cultural storytelling with contemporary fashion language. Through Ambassador Designs, she continues to introduce traditional Nepali textiles, craftsmanship, and identity to international audiences while preserving their authenticity.

Sunita Dangol’s appearance at Cannes was more than a fashion moment. It symbolized the growing global cultural presence of Kathmandu and Nepal’s evolving creative identity. Her participation highlighted how traditional culture can remain relevant and powerful within international creative spaces.

Dangol arrived in France following an official invitation from David Lisnard, Mayor of Cannes. Before attending the festival events, she was welcomed at the historic Hôtel de Ville de Cannes, marking a symbolic meeting between two UNESCO Creative Cities of Film, Cannes and Kathmandu.

Kathmandu officially joined the UNESCO Creative Cities Network as a City of Film on October 31, 2023, a major milestone for Nepal’s cultural and cinematic recognition on the international stage.

During her visit, Dangol is also promoting the Kathmandu Film Festival and exploring future collaborations in film, culture, and creative industries between the two cities. She is expected to participate in several high-level meetings and discussions with festival directors and Cannes officials focused on creative development and the future of global audiovisual industries.

Adding further pride for Nepal at the festival, Nepali filmmaker Abinash Bikram Shah’s film Elephant in the Fog is also being featured during the event. The inclusion of the film reflects the growing visibility of Nepali cinema in international film circles.

Sunita Dangol’s presence at Cannes ultimately represented more than diplomacy or fashion. It became a symbol of the modern Nepali woman confident, visionary, culturally rooted, and ready to carry Nepal’s identity onto the global stage.
