The Miss Universe Organization is once again caught in controversy just weeks before the grand finale of its 74th annual pageant. What should have been a glamorous pre-sash ceremony in Thailand turned into a public showdown after Miss Universe Mexico Fátima Bosch, 25, was insulted during a live event.
According to a report by USA Today, Thai businessman Nawat Itsaragrisil, the president of Miss Grand International and vice president for Asia and Oceania within the Miss Universe Organization, called Bosch “dumb” during a tense exchange streamed live on Facebook.
The confrontation began when Nawat accused one contestant of not fulfilling her duties in promoting Thailand and asked the group to raise their hands if they were responsible. Moments later, he turned directly to Bosch, saying, “Mexico, where are you?” and questioned her for allegedly not posting enough about the host country.
When Bosch tried to respond, the atmosphere quickly soured. In the video, she can be heard saying, “You are not respecting me as a woman.” Nawat then called for security to remove her, drawing gasps and protests from fellow contestants — some of whom reportedly walked out in solidarity, including Miss Universe Denmark Victoria Kjær Theilvig.
The Miss Universe Organization later released a statement and video message strongly condemning Nawat’s actions. MUO President Raúl Rocha Cantú denounced his behavior, saying he “humiliated and insulted” Bosch and showed a “lack of respect” by attempting to intimidate her. Cantú also announced that Nawat’s involvement in this year’s pageant had been “restricted” and could face “corporate and legal actions.” Cantú’s message was clear: “Nawat, you need to stop.”
Following massive backlash online, Nawat went live on TikTok to issue an apology, saying, “If anyone felt uncomfortable or disrespected, I do apologize.” However, the damage was already done.
Miss Universe Mexico’s organization released a firm statement supporting Bosch, saying, “No woman deserves to be insulted or humiliated.” They praised her strength and class, writing, “Your voice represents the best of our nation.”
Miss Universe 2024 winner Victoria Kjær Theilvig also expressed her support on Instagram, saying, “Standing up for yourself is not always easy, but it’s one of the most powerful acts of self-respect. Enough is enough, our voices will be heard.”
More than 130 delegates around the world competing this year at Miss Universe 2025. From Nepal, Sanya Adhikari is representing Nepal at the global 74th Miss Universe competition to be heald in Thailand on November 21.
The shocking incident has sparked global conversations about respect and women’s dignity within beauty pageants. Miss Universe is now under pressure to restore its image and regain public trust.
One thing is certain, this year’s Miss Universe is about more than beauty. It’s about courage, respect, and women refusing to be silenced.
