Indra Jatra Festival 2025 in Melbourne – Photo Highlights

Explore the vibrant moments from the first-ever Indra Jatra festival in Melbourne, featuring the Kumari chariot procession, Lakhe dance, Pulukisi performance, and colorful cultural displays.

The first-ever Indra Jatra festival (Yenya Punhi) in Melbourne was celebrated with grandeur at the Australian Nepalese Multicultural Center, organized by Nèwā Guthi Melbourne. The event brought Kathmandu’s centuries-old traditions to Victoria, marking a proud moment for the Nepalese community in Australia.

A central attraction was the chariot procession of deities Ganesh, Bhairav, and the Living Goddess Kumari, pulled by women in a symbolic gesture of empowerment. The lively Lakhe dance and entertaining Pulukisi (elephant) dance added vibrancy, while visitors enjoyed a traditional Samay Baji display, food stalls, arts, and handicrafts.

The festival was graced by Mr. Nirajan Gauli, Honorary Consul of Nepal to Victoria, and Ms. Ingrid Stitt, Minister for Multicultural Affairs Victoria, who praised the community’s role in preserving culture and enriching multicultural Victoria.

The inaugural Indra Jatra in Melbourne beautifully echoed its theme: Celebrate Culture, Support Community.
