Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh has found himself at the center of a major industry controversy after the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) officially issued a “Non-Cooperation Directive” against him over his sudden exit from the highly anticipated film Don 3.
The move has created massive discussion across the Indian film industry, as the directive effectively instructs more than four lakh workers, technicians, and affiliated members under FWICE not to collaborate with the actor on upcoming films, advertisements, or productions until the dispute is resolved.
According to reports, the controversy began after Ranveer allegedly walked away from Don 3 just weeks before filming was scheduled to begin. The film, directed by Farhan Akhtar and produced by Excel Entertainment, had reportedly been in development for nearly three years.
Producers Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani reportedly submitted a formal complaint to FWICE through the Indian Film & Television Directors’ Association (IFTDA), claiming the production suffered losses of nearly ₹40–45 crore due to Ranveer’s withdrawal. The reported expenses included international location scouting, hotel bookings, overseas travel arrangements, crew logistics, and large-scale pre-production work involving more than 200 workers.
FWICE Chief Advisor Ashoke Pandit stated that the organization attempted multiple times to resolve the matter internally. According to the federation, Ranveer was sent three separate notices over a month-long period requesting him to appear before the body and explain his position, but he allegedly failed to attend any of the hearings.
Speaking about the issue, FWICE leadership stressed that “no superstar is bigger than the industry” and described the directive as a step taken to protect producers, technicians, and daily wage workers affected by sudden production disruptions.
Interestingly, reports also claim that several senior Bollywood personalities, including Aamir Khan, attempted to mediate between the two sides before the conflict escalated publicly, but discussions reportedly failed to reach a solution.
Ranveer Singh has now responded to the controversy through his spokesperson. In an official statement, the actor said he has “the highest regard for the film fraternity” and chose to maintain “silence with dignity, maturity, and mutual respect.” His legal team reportedly argued that FWICE does not have jurisdiction over what they consider a contractual disagreement between an actor and a production company.
The situation has also sparked legal debate within the entertainment industry. Several legal experts and film analysts have questioned whether such a blanket non-cooperation directive can legally restrict an actor’s right to work. Some experts believe the dispute may eventually move toward formal legal proceedings if negotiations fail.
The controversy comes at a sensitive time for the Don franchise, which remains one of Bollywood’s most iconic action series. Ranveer Singh was announced as the new face of Don 3 in 2023, replacing Shah Rukh Khan and generating huge attention online. However, rumors surrounding creative differences, scheduling issues, and script-related concerns had been circulating for months before reports of his exit surfaced publicly.
As of now, neither Excel Entertainment nor Ranveer Singh has officially confirmed whether settlement discussions are ongoing. The future of Don 3 also remains uncertain amid the escalating industry conflict.
