Indra Jatra Festival Celebrated for the First Time in Melbourne with Grand Cultural Showcase

Melbourne celebrated its first Indra Jatra (Yenya Punhi), with the Kumari chariot procession, Lakhe dance, Samay Baji, and cultural showcases organized by Nèwā Guthi, highlighting Newar heritage in Australia.

The first-ever Indra Jatra festival (Yenya Punhi) in Melbourne, Victoria, was successfully celebrated at the Australian Nepalese Multicultural Center. The event, organized by Nèwā Guthi Melbourne, drew enthusiastic participation from the wider Nepalese community and proudly showcased the centuries-old traditions of Kathmandu in a multicultural setting.

One of the festival’s major highlights was the chariot procession of deities Ganesh, Bhairav, and the Living Goddess Kumari. In a powerful and symbolic moment, the chariot was pulled by women from the community, reflecting both cultural pride and empowerment.

Audiences were also captivated by vibrant cultural performances such as the Lakhe dance and the entertaining Pulukisi (elephant) dance, which brought energy and joy to the celebrations. Adding to the authentic experience, a traditional Samay Baji display offered visitors a taste of Newar cuisine, while stalls showcased Nepalese food, arts, and handicrafts.

The festival was further honored by the presence of Mr. Nirajan Gauli, Honorary Consul of Nepal to Victoria, and Ms. Ingrid Stitt, Minister for Multicultural Affairs Victoria, who praised the Nepalese community’s contribution to preserving heritage while enriching Victoria’s multicultural society.

Marking a historic moment, the inaugural Indra Jatra in Melbourne not only revived the essence of Yenya Punhi but also echoed the spirit of its slogan: Celebrate Culture, Support Community.
