The classic Nepali film ‘Jeevanrekha’, directed by Prakash Thapa more than four decades ago, was specially screened in Narayanghat after 43 years. The screening took place at Jalma Hall under the joint initiative of the Shiva Shrestha Foundation, the Film Development Board Nepal, and Lions Club Chitwan. Digital Cinema Nepal (DCN) also supported the event.
The special screening was organized as a sample test for the Film Development Board’s upcoming campaign titled ‘Old Is Gold’, which aims to preserve and reintroduce historic Nepali films to younger generations.
According to the board, the campaign plans to screen Nepali movies that were released more than 30 years ago on a regular basis. The main goal is not only to archive old films but also to reconnect audiences with Nepal’s cinematic history by bringing classic movies back to theaters.
The Film Development Board has already digitized 10 historic Nepali celluloid films and is preparing to digitize 10 more movies with historical, archival, and literary importance. Officials believe the initiative will help younger audiences experience legendary Nepali films that older generations grew up watching.

The event saw the presence of several notable personalities from the Nepali film industry including veteran actor Neer Shah, Film Development Board Chairman Dinesh DC, director Prakash Sayami, actor Aakash Adhikari, actor Shiva Shrestha, former board member and filmmaker Ravi Adhikari, theater operator Birendranarayan Shrestha, filmmaker Chakrabahadur Chand, Prasad Shrestha, and actor Deepak Adhikari.
Released over four decades ago, ‘Jeevanrekha’ is considered one of the important films in Nepali cinema history. The movie features performances by Shiva Shrestha, Meenakshi Anand, Shanti Maske, Prakash Thapa, Arjunjung Shahi, Basundhara Bhusal, Gopalraj Mainali, and Hari Bansha Acharya.
The screening created nostalgia among senior audiences while also introducing younger viewers to a significant chapter of Nepal’s cinematic journey. The initiative has been widely appreciated for its effort to preserve classic Nepali cinema and keep its legacy alive for future generations.
