The official teaser for Maotse Gurung’s upcoming Nepali film Pension Patta has revealed the mystery behind its title, placing a hidden family secret, Lahure culture and questions of identity and inheritance at the centre of the story.
Released on Friday, August 7, the teaser moves beyond the scenic rural world introduced through the film’s earlier promotional material and offers the clearest glimpse yet of its central conflict.
At the heart of the story is a pension document belonging to a deceased father. The document appears to contain an unexpected revelation: instead of the family mother’s name, it carries the name of the father’s first wife, a woman whose identity remains unknown to the characters.
The discovery sets off a search that appears likely to have both emotional and practical consequences. Family history, money, relationships and questions of belonging begin to intersect as the characters confront a past that had remained hidden.
Dayahang Rai Leads the Ensemble Cast
Written and directed by Maotse Gurung, Pension Patta features Dayahang Rai in the lead alongside Gaumaya Gurung, Buddhi Tamang and Wilson Bikram Rai.
The ensemble also includes Pashupati Rai, Bishwas Gurung, Pushkar Gurung, Lunibha Tuladhar, Suraj Tamu and several other performers. The late actor Sunil Thapa is also credited in the film.
Gurung is involved in the project as writer, director and producer, continuing his journey behind the camera following Dayarani.
A Story Moving From Greed to Humanity
When production began in late 2025, Gurung indicated that Pension Patta should not be viewed simply as a conventional story about a retired Gurkha soldier.
He described the film as a story involving a greedy character whose journey gradually shifts towards generosity and humanity.
The teaser now gives that idea greater context. The mysterious pension document appears to become the trigger for uncovering a complicated family past and forcing the characters to reassess relationships, loyalties and personal interests.
The story is also rooted in a social reality familiar across many Nepali communities where generations of men have served in foreign military forces. In such families, pension documents can carry not only financial and legal importance but also deeply personal meaning.
Tangting Village Shapes the Film’s Cultural World
Pension Patta was filmed largely in Tangting village of Kaski, where principal photography began in December 2025.
The production had initially planned a 35-day shooting schedule but completed filming in 33 days.
Tangting has already become an important part of the film’s visual identity. The first song, “Juni Jaala,” highlighted Gurung attire, community celebrations, village life and the surrounding rural landscape.
The song features lyrics by Hark Saud and music by Manoj Thapa Magar, with vocals by Sarun Gurung, Raj Bahadur Gurung, Usha Gurung and Priya Gurung.
Technical Team Behind ‘Pension Patta’
Cinematographer Sushan Prajapati has shot the film. Published crew information also credits Nimesh Shrestha and Ker D. Koich Linuch with editing, Rajendra Moktan with colour grading, Uttam Neupane with sound design, Navin Shrestha with sync sound, Manoj Shrestha with VFX and Raju Yakcha with art direction.
The wider music team has been reported to include Jhuma Limbu, Manoj Thapa Magar and Shiv Baraily.
Overseas Distribution Deals Secured Ahead of Release
The film has also generated early interest in the overseas Nepali market. Sapan Entertainment Ltd has acquired the UK theatrical rights, while Main Dragon Ltd has taken the Hong Kong rights. The Back Events later secured distribution rights for Australia and New Zealand.
The agreements signal interest from overseas distributors ahead of the film’s theatrical release.
September 11 Release Ahead of Teej
Pension Patta is scheduled to release across Nepal on Bhadra 26, 2083, corresponding to September 11, 2026. Some promotional reports have associated the release with Haritalika Teej. Nepal calendar listings place Teej on September 14, with Dar Khane Din on September 13, meaning the film is set to arrive three days before the festival.
That timing could allow Pension Patta to benefit from the wider festive period surrounding Teej.
With Dayahang Rai leading the cast, Maotse Gurung bringing his culturally rooted storytelling to the project and Tangting providing a distinctive rural backdrop, the teaser has given Pension Patta a much clearer dramatic hook.
More importantly, the secret hidden inside a seemingly ordinary pension record leaves audiences with one central question: who is the mysterious first wife, and what will her identity mean for the family?
