Nepal’s fashion trailblazer Gyani Shova Tuladhar has earned global recognition. The founder principal of Namuna College of Fashion Technology has been awarded a Certificate of Excellence by World Book of Records London, honoring her as an iconic fashion designer and veteran academician.
The honor was presented during the 20th International Summit & Award Ceremony in Kathmandu on April 30, 2026. For many in the industry, this recognition simply confirms what Nepal already knows Tuladhar is the “Guru Amma” of Nepalese fashion. For over five decades, she has helped transform fashion from a small scale craft into a respected academic field and a growing professional industry.
Born on May 7, 1951, in Kathmandu, Tuladhar’s journey began with a simple passion for sewing. She later trained at Zarapkar Fashion College in Mumbai on a scholarship supported by the Indian Embassy. Returning to Nepal in the early 1970s, she carried a bold vision: to create opportunities for aspiring designers and give fashion a formal identity.
Her first step was Namuna Silai, one of Nepal’s earliest fashion ventures. With basic tools and big ambition, she built a name for quality design and craftsmanship, becoming one of the country’s first professional designers.
But her real impact came through education. In 1997, she founded Namuna Institute of Technology, and in 2002, she established Namuna College of Fashion Technology in Bansbari, affiliated with Purbanchal University. The college introduced Nepal’s first academic program in fashion design, later upgraded to a four-year Bachelor of Fashion Design and Management (BFDM), blending creativity with business skills.
Today, the institution stands as a launch-pad for hundreds of designers, stylists, and entrepreneurs shaping Nepal’s fashion scene. Its growing reputation has earned both national and international recognition. It was named Best College during the 31st anniversary of Purbanchal University and received global honors, including International College of the Year (2022) and Most Prominent Fashion Designing College in Nepal (2023).
Tuladhar’s influence goes beyond classrooms. Early in her career, she worked closely with marginalized women; offering sewing and fashion training that helped many achieve financial independence. Her work has long connected creativity with empowerment.
Over the years, she has received numerous accolades, including the Lifetime Achievement Award at the NewBiz Business Women Summit and recognition among the Distinguished Women of Nepal.
Today, Gyani Shova Tuladhar stands not just as a designer, but as a movement. Her journey from a single sewing machine to building Nepal’s first fashion college has changed the industry forever. And with this latest global honor, her legacy only grows stronger.
