History on Everest: Nilam Poudel Becomes First Nepali Transgender Woman to Reach the Summit
Nilam Poudel has made history by becoming the first Nepali transgender woman to successfully summit Mount Everest, the world’s highest mountain. Her remarkable achievement on May 23, 2026, marks a milestone not only in Nepal’s mountaineering history but also in the ongoing journey toward greater visibility, inclusion, and representation for the LGBTQ+ community.
The 35-year-old climber reached the 8,849-meter summit of Mount Everest, known locally as Sagarmatha, at 6:35 a.m. during the spring climbing season. She was among eight climbers who successfully stood atop the world’s highest peak. The ascent was confirmed by Pemba Gelje Sherpa, Managing Director of Expeditions High Mountain Pvt. Ltd., the company that organized the historic expedition.
For Nilam, the climb represented something far greater than a personal triumph.
“This summit is not mine alone. It belongs to every person who has ever been made to feel unseen,” she said following the achievement.
In a message shared on social media, she added: “Today, I stood on Sagarmatha not just for myself, but for every trans person who has ever felt unseen. We belong everywhere — even at the top of the world.”
Her achievement has been celebrated across Nepal by civil society groups, youth organizations, human rights advocates, and LGBTQ+ activists, many of whom see the ascent as a landmark moment for representation and empowerment. Supporters describe the climb as a powerful statement on dignity, identity, and the right to live authentically.
After returning to Kathmandu, Nilam dedicated her success to marginalized communities that continue to face discrimination and barriers to acceptance. Her accomplishment comes at a time when transgender individuals in Nepal have gained increasing legal recognition but still encounter significant social challenges.
Advocacy group Project Abhaya praised the achievement as a symbol of “courage, dignity, and possibility,” highlighting its broader social impact.
The expedition was organized by Expeditions High Mountain Pvt. Ltd. and sponsored by Dusit Princess Kathmandu.
Nilam’s Everest success further strengthens her growing reputation in Nepal’s adventure community. Before conquering Everest, she successfully summited Mera Peak in August 2025, establishing herself as a promising mountaineer.
