Two Nepali films WHITE SUN and DADYAA, selected for 73rd Venice Film Festival


Nepali films WHITE SUN and DADYAA have been selected for Venice Film Festival. The Venice Film Festival is one of the major international film festival of the world.

The film WHITE SUN is directed by Deepak Rauniyar and a short film DADYAA is jointly directed by Bibhusan Basnet and Pooja Gurung. Both films are selected to compete in Horizons section.

The films will represent Nepal in the 73rd Venice film festival this year. last year, Min Bahadur Bham’s film KALO POTHI was selected for the festival and screened under the ‘International Critics’ Week’, an autonomous section separately organized by Italy’s critics’ association.

WHITE SUN, 87 minute long film tells the story of two brothers with conflicting ideologies. The protagonist Chandra returns home after a decade, for his father’s final rites. The course of his journey is complicated by the harsh reality of his village. The film stars Dayahang Rai, Asha Magrati, Rabindra Singh Baniya, Sumi Malla and Amrit Pariyar.

WHITE SUN has been backed by producers from USA, Netherlands and Qatar. Rauniyar’s debut feature film ‘Highway’ was screened at the 62nd Berlin Film Festival in 2012.

DADYAA, 17 minute short film tells the story of an old couple spending an isolated life in remote village, Jumla. The film is Bibushan and Pooja’s second short film. Their first short film ‘The Contagious Apparition of Dambarey Dendrite’ had a successful run in international film festivals.

The eleven day long festival will start from August 31. The organizer said that the ‘Orizzonti’ section will celebrate the latest aesthetic and expressive trend in international cinema. It is a competitive section.
